What is 1001 Unforgettable Trips?

At 1001 Unforgettable Trips our mission is to collect the world’s most memorable travel experiences and we help you experience them first-hand.

In other words, we help you find the right trip, organize it properly, have loads of fun and adventure, then enjoy a safe return home. But we don’t sell organized tours!

Instead we offer you everything you need — exciting travel ideas, detailed trip descriptions and lots more — so you can organize your own unforgettable trip without needing to book an expensive tour from a tour operator.

1001 Unforgettable Trips is still quite new, but aim to become the first website you go to whenever you think about vacation and travel.

and never miss our latest news or exciting subscriber-only offers.

Why are you called 1001 Unforgettable Trips?

Because one day we plan to reach 1001 trip descriptions — enough for anyone, at any level of fitness or adventure, to find the perfect trip here.

This is a huge task for just Katja and Bojidar, but maybe you can help us get closer? 😉

If you’ve done a truly unforgettable trip which you want to share with our readers, we’d love to hear from you!

Who is the ideal reader of 1001 Unforgettable Trips?

The ideal reader is YOU:

  • If you are eager to discover the wonders of our world as an independent traveler. And if you are visiting foreign places in order to feel at home and find your true self there.
  • If you are willing to try out new things and extend your personal limits one experience at a time.
  • And if you are willing to give up a bit of luxury for a ton of authenticity and friendly encounters all over the world. If your idea of a perfect vacation is NOT enjoying a large breakfast buffet and then lying around the pool all day.

If the above statements describe you, then congratulations! You’ve come to the right place, you’ve found the right community, and you are welcome to join the fun!

Important: Do the above statements describe how you wish to travel, but you are inexperienced and maybe a bit scared to start? Katja and Boji were also at that stage at one time, so we have a soft spot in our hearts for people exactly like you! Please join the community and let’s start figuring out how we can best help you.

Is 1001 Unforgettable Trips a guide-book, like Lonely Planet?

No, there are huge differences! Our trips and travel challenges are all about experiencing the soul of a place and collecting a lifetime of experiences.

Most guide books are between 500 and 1000 pages long and they tell you everything there is to know about every place on earth. But are you ever going to read all these pages or do you feel simply overwhelmed and even more confused about which places you should visit and in which order?

Our trip descriptions are exactly the opposite — on roughly 20 pages we describe a very specific tour to a relatively small number of places. Our itineraries are thoughtfully put together so you can experience the most exciting attractions of a given country within the time-frame of a normal trip (2-3 weeks). The places we suggest usually each have a different character — jungle, savanna, high mountains, indigenous people, modern cities — so you can experience the best of everything that your destination has to offer.

Finally, we only describe tours which we’ve tested personally and which are easily repeatable by you. Instead of telling you about all possible modes of transportation between A and B, we only describe the one which makes the most sense for each leg of your journey. Instead of going on and on about each town in the country, we lead you to just a few hand-picked ones: the town with the best fruit market and then the area of the country with the best preserved nature, etc. We send you to the museum on the day of the week when the tickets are half price and to the markets on the weekend when there is the most action and the sellers are dressed most flamboyantly.

If there are any festivals worth experiencing, we center our trip descriptions around those so that you can have a truly unforgettable journey.

What if I am new to the world of travel and adventure?

It’s great to have you here! We have tons of resources for beginners and how-to articles in our blog. Start with those, then join our user community. If you have any questions or comments, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us — we’d love to help you start traveling and enjoying the highlights of our world.

Sounds great! Can I book a tour with you?

Normally you purchase a trip description from us and plan and organize the tour by yourself. This way you can select the dates which best fit your schedule and pick the level of comfort and adventure which suit you best.

If you like company, you can also invite your friends or family to join you. In the future you’ll also be able to invite members of our user community or join your trips or you can join theirs. This is not only a great way to split the tasks and costs among several participants, it’s also a perfect way to meet like-minded people.

And then there is this possibility: from time to time we from 1001 Unforgettable Trips also organize a trip and invite community members to join us. These are normally trips to new locations with a higher adventure factor, so it helps if you’ve already created a user profile and done a few of our tours. We usually announce such tours in our newsletter first, which is just one of the reasons why you should subscribe.

How much does a tour cost?

Well, it starts with the cost of the trip description which you purchase from us. But since you are organizing the tours yourself, you will save hundreds or even thousands compared to booking an organized tour.

Our trip profiles specify an average daily budget, which is based on our suggestions about where to sleep, what to eat, and how to travel around. Personally we are pretty budget-minded, so you probably won’t be able to do the trip much cheaper, but if you desire more comfort or luxury, you can surely spend more. Also note that since we don’t know where you live, our suggested budget excludes the costs of getting to the starting point of a trip and then returning back home.

Are the activities you describe really doable by anyone?

We or our contributors have done each tour personally, so if you have average mobility and fitness, you should be able to do virtually all trips and challenges.

Whether you can or cannot do something is mostly a boundary in your head and not in your body. Bojidar is over 40 and has a of 28 (overweight), but he still hikes for a week or longer with a heavy backpack on his back and climbs mountains as high as 6000+ meters.

If you want to live a more fulfilled life but are a bit unsure about where to start, we suggest that you

What about Equipment?

Equipment plays an absolutely key role in your safety and comfort. Just imagine choosing the wrong carabiner or helmet when going on a via ferrata or getting wet on a long tour because your shoes or outer jacket are not truly waterproof.

We do a wide variety of tours, so we can tell you which pieces of gear you really need and which ones you can leave at home. And we use various gear, so we are able to compare the functionality, quality and longevity of the different items.

We talk about gear in various places on this webpage:
